Development of the Truth in Canton
The Patience and Faith of the Whitehouse Brothers.

PONTHRYDYRUN It is a long time since last you heard of the little flock in this out-of-the-way place. We have in the meantime been humbly sowing the good seed of the kingdom, hoping that God may accept our labours. We are now nine in number, including our brother McConnell, of Llangattock, and brother Lewison, of Abersychan. We meet at brother Hillman’s for breaking of bread; and the comfort and satisfaction we enjoy in thus meeting together repays us well for the trouble we have in so doing—we are so much scattered, brother and sister Whitehouse (my parents) and myself living at Panteg, brother McConnell eight miles away, brother Lewison four miles away. We attend the Newport lectures most Sundays, having to walk seven miles to get there, which, however, is through a pleasant part of the country. We have had an addition to our number this week—brother Fawcett, from Newport—who, we hope, will be useful to us in our work.—W. Whitehouse .[1]

PONTYPOOL Should any brother be able to employ brother Coles, in his line of business as intimated in last month’s Christadelphian , all communications respecting the same should be addressed to W. We intend, if the Lord will, having a general tea meeting, to which we give an hearty invitation to all of like precious faith that can make it convenient to attend, on December 31st, 1894. The object is to build and strengthen each other, in the hope of those exceeding great and precious promises, which will be realized by all that love, serve, honour and obey Him, the giver of every good and perfect gift.

PONTYPOOL Since our last report we have been cheered with visits from brethren J. Lander, Cross, Schofield, and Collard, all of Newport, Mon., who gave us cheering and comforting words of exhortation, and also lectured in the evening. We all look forward to these monthly visits from the Newport brethren with great pleasure. We have lost one of our willing and earnest helpers by the removal of brother Zebulon Whitehouse to Pittsburg, U.S.A. We are sorry to lose him; as our meeting is so small, one is much missed from our midst. May he never forget God. Lectures by our own brethren, viz: “Prophesy, fulfilled and unfulfilled,” “Thy Kingdom Come,” “The First and Last Adam,” “Christ’s Last Message.”— W. Whitehouse .[3]

New Kensington ( Pa .).—“Through the slackness in the tin-plate trade at South Wales, I have removed to this place. The nearest meeting place is Pittsburg, which is about 18 miles from here. I have not heard of any of the faith in this part, but I intend to sow the seed to the best of my poor ability.”— Zebulon Whitehouse .[4]

PONTYPOOL We are sorry to report that brother W. Whitehouse, who has been the recording brother of this ecclesia almost since its establishment, is about to emigrate. He will join his brother in the United States, where he will meet with the brethren at Pittsburgh if the Lord permit. We uphold the truth every Sunday evening, and by lectures and the distribution of leaflets. The stoppage in the tinplate trade is affecting some of us, but God is very good to us, and as yet we have not wanted for bread. Brother Schofield came up from Newport during the month and gave us a helping hand to publish the truth. We are expecting to have his assistance this month again.—C. W. Heath .[5]

Pittsburg , Pa.—We are pleased to report two additions to our number by removal—viz., brother William Whitehouse, and brother Zebulon Whitehouse—from New Kensington Pa. (17 miles from here) late from England, from Pontypool Ecclesia.—We also report several visits from brother and sister Blower, from Webster, Pa., a small mining town about 35 miles from Pittsburgh. We now number ten, and meet at the home of brother Pickin every first day in the afternoon, for exhortation and breaking of bread. We have closed our meetings at Currie Hall for an indefinite time, and would heartily welcome any brother passing this way at brother Pickin’s, Bellefield and Ridge Street.— Henry Cornman .[6]

 

Parnassas (Pa.) .—Brother W. Whitehouse, who arrived in the States from Pontypool, Wales, about two years ago, reports that sister Whitehouse and family, accompanied by sister Bartlett, “her sister in the flesh,” arrived here from Pontypool some two months ago, after a somewhat perilous voyage, the sea being so rough. He says: “I hope we have finished moving around now until the angelic messenger summonses us to the tribunal, and conduct in life been of such a character to have merited us the ‘Well done.’ Let us never cease to well do.”[7]

 

Parnassus (Pa.).—Since last writing it has been our privilege to hold a public proclamation of God’s truths for the first time in this place, where no one seems to have heard of the truth. Our first lecture was given on Sunday, January 23rd, by brother Wooliscroft, whose subject was, “Christ and his Disciples: What he taught and what they published.” The subject was well advertised in two of our local papers, and with large posters and handbills. Everything we could do was done to notify the public, and when the time came to deliver the lecture, the large hall we had taken was well filled with an apparently intelligent audience, not a crowd of youths, but a respectable and aged crowd. The lecture was grand, and the attention of the audience was excellent. We have received several inquiries regarding these truths, and some have even offered to assist us in procuring a Hall, and advertising further discourses. It is our intention to do all we can whilst the interest is keen. We are distributing literature bearing upon the subject as the discourses are given. Any brethren having tracts or leaflets, and who would like to help us by forwarding us a few, will do us great service, as our stock is very low, and the work apparently great. We still meet every first day for the breaking of bread, and to encourage each other to renewed action in spiritual things. Our visitors since last report have been: Brother and sister Williams, brethren Hardy and Thomas, all of Pittsburg; likewise brother F. C. Hindmarsh, of Mahanoy City, Pa.— W. Whitehouse .[8]

 

Parnassus (Pa.).—Our numbers have lately been greatly increased by removals and immersion. Brother F. C. Hindmarsh, also sister Hindmarsh, removed from Mahanoy City, Pa., to this place; also a week or so later sister Lizzie Hindmarsh, daughter of the foregoing, arrived here from Philadelphia, Pa. We are more than glad to announce that after an intelligent evidence of Divine truths, it was my pleasing duty to immerse two of brother Wooliscroft’s sons ( Edward and John ). The small company meeting here are greatly encouraged by these additions. Brother Wooliscroft gave a stirring lecture to an attentive and intelligent crowd. Subject: “The Kingdom of Heaven, and the Kingdom of God.” Our lectures have been held over for awhile, on account of the sickness of brother Z. Whitehouse, who has been confined to his bed for some time, a victim to typhoid fever; at the time of writing our brother is on the mend. We take this opportunity of thanking brother J. Coddington, of Brooklyn, N.Y., for his ready reply to our favour of March number in sending a good supply of literature for distribution.— W. Whitehouse .[9]

 

Philadelphia (Pa.)—Brother Kay writes, announcing the obedience, by baptism, of Miss Ada Webb (formerly Moravian), on May 2nd. He continues: “We have been having, during the past three months, a course of lectures to the alien, in Roth’s Hall, Fifth and Somerset Street. Lectures were by brethren W. L. Davies, H. Fidler, R. Stringer. And two lectures by brethren W. L. Davies and R. Stringer in a hall which was given to us free at Fifty-sixth and Woodland Avenue. We had with us for two Sundays last month, sister Etta Spargo, daughter of brother Spargo, of Hazelton. We have also staying in Philadelphia, sister Florence Richards, formerly of Hazelton. Sister Lizzie Hindmarsh has gone to Parnassus. She was married to brother Zebulon Whitehouse of that place on April 30th.”[10]

 

New Kensington , (Pa.)—You will observe our address has been changed from Parnassus to New Kensington, at which place we have secured a comfortable and suitable hall for the public proclamation of God’s truth. Also, it is much more pleasant for our morning meetings than meeting together from house to house. In fact, our numbers are now too numerous to meet in a house. In addition to our increase of those brethren and sisters announced in the May number, our numbers have been augmented by the removal of brother and sister Cooke, from Buffalo, New York, to this place, whom we have every reason to believe will be a great help in our work for the Master. We have profited already from our brother’s practical and fitting exhortations. On Sunday last, June 5th, we had the pleasant feature of a visit from brother Philip Phillips, of Newcastle, Pa. He refreshed and enlightened our minds upon the Covenants. Most of the old resident brethren of Rhondda Valley, South Wales, will know brother Phillips, and be glad to learn of his welfare, both temporal and spiritual. In all probability brother Phillips will ere long become a permanent resident amongst us, which will make our numbers close to twenty. Thanks be to God we are of one mind, in the one faith, and may we continue, and so become sons and daughters of that one family in the age to come. We again thank those brethren and sisters for so kindly replying to our request for suitable literature for the alien. Not only do we thank them for the literature, but more especially for their encouraging words which accompanied it. Our lectures have been for the last month by brother Wooliscroft and myself. We held a special meeting to form ourselves in proper shape and general working order in the truth, also adopted, by a unanimous vote, the Birmingham Temperance Hall constitution for our guidance and government. On April 30th, brother J. Whitehouse (I believe it should be Zebulon) and sister Lizzie Hindmarsh were united in marriage.— W. Whitehouse , Box 98, Parnassus, Pa.[11]

 

New Kensington (Pa.).—The small band existing in this corner of the globe are still alive and active to the things that appertain to our Eternal well-being. We cannot report any additions from the outside, but have with us for a few months our aged sister Harper, from Delray, Mich. She is staying for the winter months with her son. We are endeavouring to do our best to keep each other alive to our important position as “Sons and Daughters of God,” to perform with a perfect heart and willing mind those things which our Heavenly Father requires of us. We resumed our evening meetings for the exhibition of God’s truth on Sunday, November 6th, 1898, by brother Philip Phillips, who gave a splendid discourse on “The Promises made to the Fathers.” We had a small but very attentive audience. We find it uphill work, and have great odds to battle against; the people being so influenced by the prospects of gain (worldly) if they attend the same place of worship as the popular and influential men of our small town. Our visitors during the mouth have been brother and sister Phillips, of Newcastle Pa., and sister Picken, of Pittsburgh, Pa.— W. Whitehouse .[12]

New Kensington (Pa.).—We held a fraternal gathering on Monday, December 26th, 1898, when brethren and sisters from Pittsburgh and New Castle, Pa., favoured us with their presence. In all about forty sat down to a well-filled table of all kinds of good things, such as our American sisters know how to spread. Having sung one verse of hymn 47 and prayer by brother E. J. Wooliscroft, each one did ample justice to the good things provided. Tea being cleared away, arrangements were made for a mental feast. A good programme was arranged and got through to the pleasure and satisfaction of all present. It consisted of speeches, recitations and singing. The speakers were brethren E. J. Wooliscroft, Phillip Phillips (of New Castle, Pa.), Abraham Cooke, Z. Whitehouse, J. Scragg (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and W. Whitehouse. Each brother spoke with great feeling, and each one present experienced how good and pleasant it was to meet together. Our Sunday evening lectures are not so well attended as we should like; still, we do our best, knowing that we are labouring for One who knows and sees all things from beginning to end. Our morning meetings are fairly well attended. Lectures for the past month have been given by brethren Wooliscroft, W. Whitehouse, Phillip Phillips (of New Castle, Pa.), and Abraham Cooke.— W. New Kensington (Pa.).—We are greatly indebted for the major portion of our spiritual refreshments to brother E. J. Wooliscroft, for the healthy, encouraging, and edifying exhortations our brother gives time and again: We love him for his works’ sake and faithful service in God’s truth. We still continue the public proclamation of the glorious Gospel, with but little encouragement, so far as attendance of the alien goes; still, we have many encouragements to press on with the good work, especially as the seed is beginning to sprout in the hearts of our young people. The attendance and interest of the household is very good. Since our last report, we have been honoured with visits of brethren and sisters from various places. First, brother Philip Phillips, of Newcastle, Pa., in answer to an invitation from us to lecture on “The Hope of Israel.” A few weeks later came brother and sister Blower, from Webster, Pa., accompanied by our esteemed brother and sister Dr. Welch, of Shire Oaks, The Dr. spoke to us for an hour at the breaking of bread, drawing our attention to the absolute necessity of rightly comprehending the truths relating to Jesus Christ our Lord, as “The Slain Lamb.” On Monday, December 25th, we held our second annual fraternal gathering, which eclipsed any meeting previously held here. At the close, four applications for fellowship were made—Mr. Arthur Wooliscroft , of Pittsburgh (42), brother in the flesh to brother E. J. Wooliscroft, of this place, was examined here by the Pittsburgh brethren, assisted by brother Phillips, and after giving satisfactory proof of his belief of the things of the kingdom and name, was baptized into Christ, and like the eunuch of old, went on his way rejoicing. This speaks well for the humble few names at Pittsburgh, whose numbers he will increase. Again, Mrs. Williams , wife of brother Williams, of Newcastle, expressed her desire of entering into the ark of safety, and upon her intelligent confession of the truth, was baptized, and returned to Newcastle “A New Creature.” This is another result of brother Phillips’ active work in the Master’s vineyard. Thirdly, Elma Cooke (19), eldest son of brother and sister A. Cooke, to the surprise of all, arose and requested that his name be placed with the former applicants for fellowship. Elma, as we call him, gave an excellent account of our Father’s plan and purpose; and is now brother Cooke, jun., much to the pleasure of us all, and to the joy, satisfaction, and comfort of brother and sister Cooke. Fourthly, Mr. T. Dillinger (formerly Baptist, although he has been in connection with many religious denominations). Mr. Dillinger was examined on Sunday, December 31st, and having given satisfaction to the examining committee of his knowledge of the saving truth, will (D.V.) be immersed into the Memorial Name on Saturday, Jan. 6th.—[Brother Whitehouse writes on January 3rd. Ed .] This is the direct result of the seed of the Kingdom sown in this place. “Do but sow it, it will grow, Though the way you may not know.”

Visitors on December 25th were as follows. They all came on Saturday, December 23rd, and spent Sunday with us likewise: From Newcastle, brother and sister Phillips, brethren John Phillips, jun., and Williams; from Webster, Pa., brother and sister Blower, and sisters Morris and Elliott; from Pittsburgh, brother and sister Pickin, brother and sister Scragg, and brother Hardy. In all, about sixty sat down to a well-filled table 48 feet long, and partook of a substantial meal. Speakers at evening meeting, December 25th, were: Brethren E. J. Wooliscroft (presiding), Phillips, and Williams, of Newcastle; Hardy and Scragg, of Pittsburgh; W. Blower, of Webster. Our own brethren: Cooke, Z. Whitehouse, J. Wooliscroft, W. Whitehouse.— W. Canton (Ohio).—You will see our address has changed. Ever since those new and novel features of brother Andrew and Williams were promulgated in New Kensington, Pa., which caused a separation or a compromise, and the former was decided upon by a few, both sides were very uncomfortably situated in so small a town. Of course we could not sit still, quiet and inactive, whilst the brethren from whom we separated publicly exhibited their view of the truth; so we set to work, secured a Hall, made preparations for public work—when, all at once, my brother and self were offered employment in the tinplate industry at Canton, O. After due deliberation we decided to move from the scene of strife (doctrinal), which was growing more bitter as the flesh was manifesting itself, and, in a humble way, sow the seeds of truth concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ in an entirely new field. A public address has been delivered in the Assembly Rooms of the City Hall, which has caused several enquiries concerning the “sect everywhere spoken against.” We have a comfortable Hall, where we meet for the breaking of bread every Sunday morning; it is “an upper room,” too. Should any brother be passing this way, we shall be glad to receive such, whether he be a public speaker or not; if a public speaker, we would like to hear of his expected visit, and so make arrangements for a lecture. Canton (Ohio).—It is with pleasure I pen these few items of intelligence from this place. I believe it is the first time in the history of the truth’s revival that such has been done, with the exception of the few lines I wrote you some few months ago. At that time we numbered three, who met every first day of the week in remembrance of Christ, and to meditate upon the past, present, and future goodness of the God of Heaven. We now have a membership of twelve, after losing one sister by removal. Our recent additions are brother and sister Phillips , of Newcastle, Pa., which includes brethren John and Philip Phillips, sons of the above; brother David Reese, of Connelsville, Pa.; also sister W. Whitehouse and brother Howard Hindmarsh, who for some time were undecided about meeting with us on account of those germs of disease about “baptism for Adamic sin,” &c., as well as the false teachings on the responsibility question, being to some extent contracted by them. Having now openly acknowledged our basis of faith and doctrine to be the only scriptural one, they meet with us on the basis of the amplified Birmingham statement of faith. On October 23rd, Mrs. Fredricks (daughter of brother and sister Hindmarsh, who still meet with us here), was, after an intelligent confession of the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Christ, immersed into the only Name given under heaven whereby man might be saved. We are grieved that circumstances have compelled our young sister to remove from this place, her husband being employed at New Kensington, Pa., to which place she has already gone. The brethren have been very successful in securing a fine hall to meet in. The meetings are very well attended, all being apparently animated with a disposition to fight manfully the fight of faith, and so lay hold on eternal life. This ecclesia has received a great impetus by the arrival of brother Phillips and family.— W. Whitehouse .[16]

 

New Kensington (Pa.).—Several months have come and gone since last you heard from here, nevertheless, we have not been idle or inactive, but progressing on, here a little, there a little, line upon line, and precept upon precept. Our meetings together to break the bread in remembrance of our Lord and Master are well attended. Since last writing, our numbers have been augmented by six, viz., brother and sister Abraham Cooke, Elmer and Herbert Cooke , removed from Newcastle, Pa.; the latter was examined and immersed here whilst on a visit during the month of July last. We have gained by removal also, brother Arthur Wooliscroft, late of Pittsburgh; also Howard Hindmarsh, eldest son of brother and sister Hindmarsh, decided to put his hand to the Gospel plough. That he may never look back, is the prayer and desire of us all. Remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth. Special efforts have been made for the proclamation and dissemination of the one saving truth. The Opera House was engaged, in which brother E. J. Wooliseroft delivered a course of three lectures on Sundays, Nov. 11th, 18th, 25th. Subject for November 11th, “The Nature of Man: Is it Mortal or Immortal?”; November 18th, “Eternal Life in Relation to Man;” November 25th, “How to Obtain Eternal Life, and When.” The attendance was fair, especially the first. Ten dollars worth of pamphlets were distributed on the occasion, and interest is being aroused here and there. Like Nehemiah of old, we have undertaken a good work, and cannot come down. All are busily engaged, some speaking in public, some speaking in private, some posting bills, others lending literature, and so collectively we hope to be the humble means of assisting in raising, not the walls of Nehemiah’s time, but that spiritual edifice for the Almighty to dwell in, and to Him be all the glory and praise. With regard to the responsibility question, of which much has been said of late, it has been decided not to allow anyone to teach, either publicly or privately, that enlightened rejecters of God’s truth are not amenable to the judgment seat, under penalty of disfellowship. Alas for the strife and contention that exists in our midst, when we should have the “very salt of the truth” in our minds. Let us utter our petitions from a pure heart for the appearance of Him who stilled the troubled waters of the Galilean lake, to calm our troubled state, and say again, “Peace be still.”— W. New Kensington (Pa.).—We are still endeavouring to walk and act according to the advice of brother Paul to Timothy; “Take heed unto ‘thyself’ and unto the ‘doctrine.’ Continue in them.” The “doctrine,” or the truth of God, is having a continuous consideration by the brethren in setting it forth to those having ears to hear. But alas, how few receive with cordial faith the tidings which we bring. Occasionally a few attend to hear an exposition of Jehovah’s message to the lost world. Lectures have been given during the month by brethren Wooliscroft, W. Whitehouse, Z. Whitehouse, and A. Cooke.— W. Whitehouse .[18]

New Kensington (Pa.).—The miseries of controversy have come upon us, generally on those much vexed questions of baptism for “Adamic Condemnation,” “Inherited Alienation,” “Inherited Wrath,” &c., &c. Also the question of responsibility to the judgment seat. These things, which have made considerable havoc in various places, have cast their gloomy and wretched hand upon us, and resulted, as in other places, in the miseries of division or separation, cutting asunder family connections, children from their parents, and wife from husband. Christ foretold that such a condition of things would come, but they that endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. These are hard things to endure. No one can tell to any extent, only those having experienced such bitter strokes of separation. Address after address had been given in favour of the first above-named doctrines, until it could not be endured longer by those having regard for purity of doctrine and fellowship, and of the absolute necessity to be all of one mind, and all speak the same things. Things had gone so far that it was impossible to do so, hence the necessity for separation. On the question of responsibility, there is by no means that oneness of mind and thought that should exist even amongst those that remain, some truthfully and candidly declaring the resurrection from the dead of enlightened rejecters of God’s truth, while others hold and teach (if not publicly) privately that light is not the ground of resurrectional responsibility. How can two walk together unless they agree? Some say we agree to differ. This might do in matters mundane, but not with the inspired word of God. It offers no such latitude of opinions on such questions. As a result of the conception, and persistent teaching on the question now agitated by brethren Andrew and Williams, a few have deemed it necessary and safe (though painful) to separate from those holding or fellowshipping such doctrine. Resolutions have been read and adopted by us as follows, which are made public that it be known where we are, and how we stand: “Be it resolved that the statement of faith as used by the Birmingham Temperance Hall ecclesia be endorsed and adopted by us as our basis of fellowship, and we welcome to our fellowship those only who adhere to said statement of faith. And, further, seeing there has been by various brethren false doctrines advanced on Adamic Condemnation, viz., that the sin of Adam is imputed to his posterity, and that baptism is for the removal of Adamic condemnation; original sin, inherited alienation, &c., also that enlightened rejecters of God’s truth are not amenable to resurrection and judgment (or non-responsible unless baptized). Be it resolved, that we repudiate these doctrines and refuse to fellowship those who teach or uphold to the above repudiated doctrines.”— W. Whitehouse , box 656, New Kensington, Pa.[19]

New Kensington (Pa.).—Our intelligence which appeared in the October number, relating to the division caused by the teaching of baptism for Adamic condemnation, inherited sin, Divine wrath, &c., and the endorsement by the major portion of the ecclesia of the non-resurrection of enlightened rejecters, did not seem clear to all minds. There are now two meeting places here; will you kindly make it plain that such is the case, as we wish it to be understood where we stand upon these questions. And we will not knowingly fellowship either of the departures. The brethren who hold and support the doctrine of brother J. J. Andrew still meet at the hall as heretofore, whilst those who feel they cannot be parties to said departures meet at the house of brother Z. Whitehouse, Parnassus, Pa., where those who still endorse the truth as brought to light by God through Dr. Thomas, and faithfully upheld by brother R. Roberts, will find welcome, and fellowship. We are constantly accused of having changed, and following and strengthening the hands of those who have changed too, viz., the late and present Editor of the Christadelphian , with all its supporters. This we will calmly endure. Surely there is an end, at which time the secrets of all hearts will be made manifest. Our hopes have been brightened and our faith strengthened, by the company, for a few days, of brother and sister Dr. Welch, of Shire Oaks. To meet him is to love him, for his fidelity to the one saving faith of the Bible. Brother Welch gave us an excellent address, basing his remarks on the 6th chapter of Romans. It grieves us to think that, to all appearances, there are no signs of reconciliation upon these questions this side the appearance of Him whose coming is like the refiner’s fire, and like the fuller’s soap. Come, Lord Jesus, and bring the desired release, is the prayer of faithful brethren and sisters of Christ.— W. Whitehouse .[20]

 

New Kensington (Pa.).—Brother W. Whitehouse, writing approvingly of the attitude of the Christadelphian in the matter of the Responsibility Question, continues as follows:—“The few names here have been cheered and their faith greatly strengthened by a visit from brother Bruce, of Jersey City, who gave us an exhilarating exhortation at the breaking of bread, and conversed with us until the late hours of night upon the exceeding great and precious truth. How lovely beyond expression is the statement of old, ‘Behold how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.’ It is a foretaste, as it were, of one of those indispensable characteristics of the age yet to come. Brother Bruce occupied about three hours on the Sunday afternoon in conversation with those from whom we separated, on the question of Baptism for Adamic sin, Inherited sin, &c., with no present result, save that of cementing us closer and firmer together in the truth once for all delivered unto the saints, to the which, by the help of God, and the prayers of the household, we will hold with a double grasp, until death, or better, the return of the world’s greatest and best friend, ‘Jesus, the Son of God.’”— W. Canton (Ohio).—You will see our address has changed. Ever since those new and novel features of brother Andrew and Williams were promulgated in New Kensington, Pa., which caused a separation or a compromise, and the former was decided upon by a few, both sides were very uncomfortably situated in so small a town. Of course we could not sit still, quiet and inactive, whilst the brethren from whom we separated publicly exhibited their view of the truth; so we set to work, secured a Hall, made preparations for public work—when, all at once, my brother and self were offered employment in the tinplate industry at Canton, O. After due deliberation we decided to move from the scene of strife (doctrinal), which was growing more bitter as the flesh was manifesting itself, and, in a humble way, sow the seeds of truth concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ in an entirely new field. A public address has been delivered in the Assembly Rooms of the City Hall, which has caused several enquiries concerning the “sect everywhere spoken against.” We have a comfortable Hall, where we meet for the breaking of bread every Sunday morning; it is “an upper room,” too. Should any brother be passing this way, we shall be glad to receive such, whether he be a public speaker or not; if a public speaker, we would like to hear of his expected visit, and so make arrangements for a lecture. Canton (Ohio).—It is with pleasure I pen these few items of intelligence from this place. I believe it is the first time in the history of the truth’s revival that such has been done, with the exception of the few lines I wrote you some few months ago. At that time we numbered three, who met every first day of the week in remembrance of Christ, and to meditate upon the past, present, and future goodness of the God of Heaven. We now have a membership of twelve, after losing one sister by removal. Our recent additions are brother and sister Phillips , of Newcastle, Pa., which includes brethren John and Philip Phillips, sons of the above; brother David Reese, of Connelsville, Pa.; also sister W. Whitehouse and brother Howard Hindmarsh, who for some time were undecided about meeting with us on account of those germs of disease about “baptism for Adamic sin,” &c., as well as the false teachings on the responsibility question, being to some extent contracted by them. Having now openly acknowledged our basis of faith and doctrine to be the only scriptural one, they meet with us on the basis of the amplified Birmingham statement of faith. On October 23rd, Mrs. Fredricks (daughter of brother and sister Hindmarsh, who still meet with us here), was, after an intelligent confession of the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Christ, immersed into the only Name given under heaven whereby man might be saved. We are grieved that circumstances have compelled our young sister to remove from this place, her husband being employed at New Kensington, Pa., to which place she has already gone. The brethren have been very successful in securing a fine hall to meet in. The meetings are very well attended, all being apparently animated with a disposition to fight manfully the fight of faith, and so lay hold on eternal life. This ecclesia has received a great impetus by the arrival of brother Phillips and family.— W. Whitehouse .[23]

Canton (O.).—Some few months ago we forwarded an item of news from this place, but not seeing it in the intelligence columns, have concluded that the letter went astray. Nevertheless, we are still here ourselves, not having the least inclination to stray from the pathway of righteousness and truth. Whilst our numbers have been reduced by removals, we are pleased to state that Mrs. Martha Phillips , wife of brother John Phillips, after a very satisfactory confession, was baptised into the only Name given under heaven whereby man can be saved. Also John Thomas , after being examined at Newcastle, Pa., came here for immersion, which will augment the few names at Newcastle. This is yet another outcome of brother Philip Phillips’ active work in the vineyard of God. Others are interested in the same town. We meet together in one of Canton’s “upper rooms” every Sunday morning at 10.30, to partake of those emblems which remind us of God’s love and Christ’s perfect obedience to the Father’s will, and likewise to provoke one another to love and good works. This month the writer visited numerous brethren and sisters in Canada, including Hamilton, Galt, Guelph, etc., and I am more than encouraged to find that the truth has such a firm hold, such strength and backbone, so to speak, as is unmistakably manifested in the lives and characters of men and women found on the Canadian continent, which is the outcome of an uncompromising attitude, and a continuous practice of divine precepts. Visitors during the month have been brother Arthur Wooliscroft, of New Kensington, Pa., and brother William Davis, of Newcastle, Pa. Since last writing, the brethren have secured the use of the City Hall for several week-night lectures. Whilst there was not the audience expected, in view of the work done in advertising, the brethren feel they did their duty, leaving the results with the all-wise eternal God. Should any brother be passing this way, he will be very welcome to call on us. We are expecting brother Huggins in the near future, who is at present in Canada. Brother Philip Phillips, who was away for a few months, has returned, for which we are very thankful, as we depend chiefly upon him in active service, as well as in singing. According to promise, brother Dr. Welch should have visited us, but on account of sickness the trip has been postponed.— W. Whitehouse .

Canton (Ohio).—Since our last communication several changes have taken place, some desirable, others not so. In connection with the latter, we have lost, by removal to Connellville, Pa., brother D. Reese; though the brethren were very desirous of his remaining with us, circumstances would not allow. In our last report we spoke of the probability of safe and satisfactory arrangements being made with several at Akron, whereby we may meet together upon one basis or foundation of truth and righteousness, the foundation laid by Christ and his apostles. The result of several interviews with the Akron brethren and sisters is that an ecclesia is now formed at that place numbering five, with the prospects of more being added in the near future. Akron has for some reason or other been badly swept with the storms of “Turneyism,” Partial Inspirationism, Immortal Immergence, etc. How grateful some of them are for deliverance therefrom can be gathered from the statements and actions of those now with us. Brother and sister Barnes, of Akron, visited us last Sunday, and in a few remarks made by our aged brother, he said, “How grateful we are to be snatched from the evil and hollowness of certain doctrines of men, none save ourselves know.” In reply, we can say we are equally as pleased to have the company of these brethren. And unto the God of Israel be all the praise for the work accomplished. It is very gratifying to see the interest displayed in connection with the truth by some of the young brethren, who are commencing to be a help in maintaining the truth against such terrible opposition as manifested here and elsewhere. Brother Harry Somerville, who came here some few months ago, has been, and is, of considerable help in presenting the truth to those disposed to attend our meetings. As the fingers on the clock intimate the hour of the day so the finger of time, as moving on the political horizon, indicates that the time for the destruction of the colossal image is rapidly approaching, and the time to favour Zion is on the wing. Jesus said, “What I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”— W. Whitehouse .[24]

 

Canton (Ohio).— 1,032, Mahoning Street. Meeting for Breaking of Bread, 10.30 a.m. —We have few visitors, and when visited by those whose lives are sacrificed upon the altar of the truth, we feel like saying, “Abide with us,” but, alas, the days are evil; some we may never see again this side of the Kingdom. Last fall, we had the fellowship of brother and sister Thos. Trezise, of Baltimore, Md. Brother Trezise exhorted us at the breaking of bread. Our brother was personally acquainted with Dr. Thomas, and it was interesting to hear the accounts of the early history of the truth; then brother Strickler, of Buffalo, N.Y., who laboured almost beyond strength in the work of the truth. Sister H. Shaw, of Cleveland, Ohio, and sister A. Blower, of Bellevernon, Pa., met with us, and we were agreeably surprised to have the company of brother and sister Wm. Blower, of Bellevernon, Pa. Brother Blower exhorted at the table on the importance of our calling.— Z. Whitehouse .[25]

 

Akron (Ohio).— Jackson Block, Main Street. Sundays, 10.30 a.m. —It is with pleasure we are able to report that two more have come out of the world and put on the name of Christ by baptism. After a satisfactory confession, Mrs. Grace Weidner and Mr. Reuben Munnerley (the latter the son of brother and sister D. Munnerley, of Gippsland, Australia, and brother in the flesh to sister May Munnerley, of this ecclesia) were immersed on Saturday, Oct. 28th, brethren H. Sommerville and W. Whitehouse coming here from Canton, O., to render assistance. By the co-operation of the Canton, O., brethren we have made further efforts to place the truth before the alien. The following lectures have lately been delivered: Oct. 22nd, “If a man die shall he live again,” Nov. 5th, “God’s Covenant with the Patriarchs,” brother Z. Whitehouse; Oct. 29th, “Does it Matter what we Believe,” Nov. 12th, “The World’s Greatest Preacher and what he Preached,” brother W. Whitehouse. We have had a fair attendance at these lectures, they have been favourably reported in the public press, and it is to be hoped that good will result therefrom. We would be pleased to have any brother or sister, passing this way, call on us, and we assure them a hearty welcome.— Theo. E. Jentsch .[26]

 

Canton (O.).— Sundays: Bible Class and School, 9.30 a.m.; Breaking of Bread, 10.30 a.m.; Meeting, 7 p.m. —Though it is some time since we reported from here it is not that our interest is on the wane. The brethren and sisters are endeavouring to act in harmony with precepts laid down, doing their best to train up the young in the way they should grow, others spreading the truth of God by lecturing and conversation. The meetings for the breaking of bread appear to be better attended than they have been for some time; the return of warmer weather being favourable to some who cannot expose themselves to the blasts of American winters. The lectures, which have been by our own brethren, viz., Z. Whitehouse, H. Sommerville, and W. Whitehouse, have received a better attendance of strangers of late, which is encouraging. It gives us great pleasure to report an addition by removal, viz., brother Arthur Woolliscroft from New Kensington, Pa. This is one of those additions that count in the same way we speak of disciples, and disciples indeed. One whose seat is not vacant at any meetings called for the interest of the truth, and who verily believes the apostle John when he said, “He that doeth righteousness is righteous.” We have had the company of bro. Theo. Jentsch at the table of the Lord. At the request of sister Wentz, who is alone in Bucyrus, Ohio, brother Z. Whitehouse, of this place, gave two lectures, accompanied by brother Shaw, of Cleveland, Ohio. “He that goeth forth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.”— W. Canton (Ohio).—Since our last report, we are pleased and strengthened with the company of brother David Peese, of Connellsvill, Pa.; brother Peese having secured employment here. Also, we are looking for brother John Thomas, of Newcastle, Pa., to be with us this week. Brother Thomas was immersed here last July. As intimated in our last intelligence, brother R. G. Huggins spent about two weeks amongst us, lecturing to the alien, spoke words of comfort to the household, and did good general work to bring the truth before those desirous of looking into the same. Brother Huggins is a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, having the ability to rightly divide the Word of Truth. Our prayers ascend to the God of heaven, that our brother’s hands may be strengthened to make manifest the wisdom of God, as well manifest the foolishness of men. Through the efforts of brother Huggins, Cleveland ecclesia has been put in touch with the Canton ecclesia, and now have the great pleasure of meeting on the same basis or foundation of Christadelphian faith and hope ( i.e. , the Birmingham Temperance Hall statement). Visitors from Cleveland: brother Shaw, sister Hannah Shaw, thrice; brother Harry Somerville, and sister Bartlett. The brethren here are endeavouring to reach the brethren at Akron, Ohio, where the truth has experienced many changes during the last few years. In answer to an invitation to visit us, three brethren and three sisters replied by their presence, and the way now seems clear for the formation of an ecclesia once again in Akron upon a right basis. Akron is situate twenty-two (22) miles from Canton, easily reached by rail or street car. Five of said brethren and sisters came to the lecture last Sunday, and expressed their desire for a speedy and safe arrangement whereby we can meet together with the oneness of mind and purpose as displayed in the Scriptures of truth. Brethren Z. Whitehouse and P. Phillips will journey to Akron on Saturday next. The brethren are delighted over these impending changes, for instead of being, as it were, cast upon a desert island, they are surrounded by brethren and sisters of a character in the truth that bring seasons of a very refreshing character. The brethren here still maintain their stand in the same hall, meeting at 10.30 in the morning for the breaking of bread, and in the evening at 7.30 for the public proclamation of God’s word. Whilst we are glad and rejoice that brother Philip Phillips has secured a fair position of work, we are sorry it requires his attention on Sunday evenings, which interferes with him lecturing for us, for the which brother Phillips is ably fitted. Nevertheless, as the light must shine and the banner be displayed. brother Z. Whitehouse and myself do what we can to keep the way of salvation before the public.
